Does Ultraformer MPT or Volnewmer Hurt? Comfort, Downtime and Why It's One Session a Year
Updated: 1 day ago
Short answer: Ultraformer MPT (focused ultrasound) and Volnewmer (monopolar radiofrequency) are both single-session treatments, usually repeated once a year. They are done awake, without injections or sedation. Ultraformer MPT is felt as short, deep pricks of heat — strongest near bone along the jaw and forehead. Volnewmer is felt as rolling waves of warmth, softened by water cooling and vibration. Most people return to normal activities the same day, which is why international patients can fly home the next morning.
Why one session — and why once a year
Both technologies rely on controlled heat. Heat makes collagen fibres contract and then triggers weeks of remodelling. New collagen builds up over 2–3 months, so the result is judged at around three months, not on the day.
That is also why a second session a month later makes little sense: you would be heating tissue that is still remodelling. Ageing, on the other hand, continues — so the sensible rhythm is one session, then maintenance once a year.
What Ultraformer MPT feels like
Ultraformer MPT focuses ultrasound energy into tiny points at fixed depths — 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.5 mm — without damaging the skin surface. The 4.5 mm depth reaches the SMAS, the same supporting layer a surgeon tightens in a facelift.
The sensation: a brief, deep prick of heat with each pulse, most noticeable near bone — the jawline, the forehead, the temples.
What "MPT" changes: MPT stands for Micro-Pulsed Technology. Energy is delivered in faster, denser micro-pulses with several treatment modes, so the session is shorter and the energy can be spread rather than concentrated in a few strong shots.
How we manage it: energy is adjusted to your tolerance and anatomy. The goal is the right energy at the right depth, not the highest number the device allows.
What Volnewmer feels like
Volnewmer uses 6.78 MHz monopolar radiofrequency to heat the dermis in a broad, even layer while the tip is cooled with circulating water. A four-step vibration runs alongside the heat and distracts the nerves.
The sensation: a wave of warmth that builds and fades with each pulse; some areas feel hotter for a second.
Numbing cream is usually unnecessary.
Tips by area: 0.25 cm² around the eyes, 3 cm² for the jawline, 4 cm² for the face and 16 cm² for the body.
VOLFORMER: both in one sitting
VOLFORMER is a combination protocol in which Ultraformer MPT and Volnewmer are applied in the same session, in a set order — one works point by point on the deep supporting layer, the other on skin density. It is still one session. I did not develop VOLFORMER; I presented it at DEAK 2026 and teach it to physicians. More: The VOLFORMER protocol.
The first 72 hours
Same day: mild redness and warmth, usually gone within hours. Make-up can normally be worn the next day.
Days 1–3: tenderness along the jawline when you touch it; occasionally mild swelling.
Uncommon: small bruises, or a temporary numb spot or brief weakness of a small facial muscle after deep ultrasound, which resolves on its own (Sabet-Peyman & Woodward, 2014). Tell us if anything feels unusual.
On day one avoid: sauna, very hot showers and hard workouts.
When we lower the energy or say no
Thin faces or recent weight loss: deep ultrasound energy is dosed cautiously, because fat thinning has been reported in lean faces (Suh et al., 2016).
Radiofrequency: not used over a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, or over metal implants in the treatment area.
Pregnancy, or active infection or inflammation in the area: we wait.
Heavy skin excess: no device replaces surgery, and I will tell you if that is the case.
Planning the trip
Kırklareli is about 2 hours by car (≈190 km) from Istanbul Airport, around 45 minutes from Edirne and about 30 km from the Bulgarian border at Dereköy–Malko Tarnovo. Because there is no downtime, a typical visit looks like this: send photos on WhatsApp first → examination in the morning → treatment the same day → back to Istanbul in the evening or a flight the next day. Disclosure: this training role is a relationship with the manufacturer, so I make a point of writing what these devices cannot do as clearly as what they can. Last updated: 13 October 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need numbing cream?
Usually not. Volnewmer has built-in cooling and vibration; with Ultraformer MPT we adjust energy and pacing. If you are very sensitive, tell us beforehand.
Can I fly the day after?
Yes. There is no wound and no downtime, so flying the next day is fine.
Do I need a second session after a month?
No. One session, assessed at around three months, then once a year for maintenance.
Is it suitable for darker skin types?
Generally yes. Neither treatment targets pigment the way some lasers do; settings are still chosen individually.
How long does a session take?
Usually 45–90 minutes, depending on the areas and on whether one or both devices are used.
