Trichoscopy and Hair Analysis: How a Dermatologist Finds the Cause of Hair Loss

Short answer: Trichoscopy is dermoscopy of the scalp and hair. In a few minutes it separates the main causes of hair loss, decides whether a biopsy or blood tests are needed, and gives a baseline to measure treatment against. It is what distinguishes a dermatology consultation from a clinic that sells sessions.

What it shows

  • Androgenetic alopecia: hair-shaft diameter variability, more single-hair units, peripilar signs.

  • Telogen effluvium: many short regrowing hairs of uniform thickness, empty follicles.

  • Alopecia areata: yellow dots, black dots, exclamation-mark hairs.

  • Scarring alopecia: loss of follicular openings, perifollicular scale and redness.

  • Scalp diseases: scale type and vessel patterns that separate psoriasis from seborrheic dermatitis.

How the visit works

History, scalp examination, trichoscopy with photo documentation, pull test, and targeted blood tests: ferritin, thyroid, vitamin D, B12 and hormones when indicated. The treatment plan follows from the diagnosis, not the other way round.

For patients travelling from abroad

The first visit, trichoscopy and, where appropriate, the first treatment are completed in one appointment. Follow-up largely runs through photographs and messaging, so repeated travel is not needed.

Patients from Bulgaria and Greece

Our practice is in Kırklareli, a short drive from the Bulgarian and Greek borders. Consultation, trichoscopy and the first treatment are usually completed in a single visit; follow-up runs by photo and WhatsApp. See our hair loss treatments page for the overall approach.
