Botox for Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Choosing clothes around sweat, not raising your arms in a meeting, avoiding handshakes... Hyperhidrosis is not "an embarrassing detail" — it is a medical condition with a name, a diagnosis and an effective treatment.

First, the distinction: normal or hyperhidrosis?

Sweating in heat and during exercise is normal. Hyperhidrosis is sweating far beyond need that affects daily life — most often in the underarms, palms and soles. Occasionally there is an underlying cause (thyroid, certain medications, other conditions) — the medical assessment exists to exclude that too, not only to inject.

Treatment, in honest steps

  1. Clinical-strength antiperspirants — the first step in mild cases; inexpensive and sometimes enough

  2. Botulinum toxin — one of the most effective methods in axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis: it blocks the nerve signal to the sweat glands. The effect usually begins in the first week and typically lasts 4-6 months, longer in some patients; for many people one session means an entire hot season lived calmly

  3. In resistant cases, oral medication and other options are discussed

How the session works

For the underarms: many very small points, evenly distributed, 15-20 minutes, with no interruption to your activities — you return to your day immediately. Treatment of the palms is also possible; there, discomfort management is planned separately, because the palm is more sensitive.

The honest notes

  • The effect is not permanent — anyone promising otherwise is selling. Repetition is done when sweating returns, usually at 4-6 months

  • The goal is not "zero sweat" but a normal life — and that is achieved very well. The treatment is local; your body's overall sweating and thermoregulation are not disturbed

  • It is not used in pregnancy or breastfeeding; neuromuscular conditions must be disclosed

  • Side effects are usually minimal: transient tenderness at the injection points

  • Do not stop anticoagulants on your own — the plan is coordinated with the doctor who prescribed them

A calendar suggestion

The smartest timing is spring, before the hot season — the effect then covers the whole summer. But the treatment works in any season, and patients who travel often schedule it alongside another appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Does it hurt? — In the underarms discomfort is minimal; for the palms, pain management is applied. How quickly does it work? — Usually within 4-7 days; full effect at two weeks. Does the sweat "move" elsewhere? — Mild compensatory sweating is possible in some patients, usually discreet. Will sweating stop completely? — No, and that is not the aim: physiological sweating continues while the excess is significantly reduced. How often is it repeated? — When the effect fades — typically at 4-6 months; many patients come once a year, in spring.
