BBL Photorejuvenation: Sun Spots, Redness and Skin Quality
BBL (BroadBand Light) is not a laser in the strict sense — it is intense pulsed light with selectable wavelength ranges, and that flexibility is both its strength and the reason it needs medical judgment. The principle is simple: light energy is absorbed by specific targets in the skin — pigment or hemoglobin in vessels — and converts to heat precisely there, sparing the surrounding skin. So the honest first question is never "what can BBL do?" but "what is your target?"
Target 1: Pigment — sun spots, freckles, lentigines
Brown spots from accumulated sun exposure are BBL's most satisfying territory: the pigment absorbs the light, darkens briefly, then flakes away over days. Important dermatological caveat: not every brown spot is a cosmetic target.Pigmented lesions are checked — dermoscopically where needed — before any light touches them, because treating an unexamined lesion means losing a diagnosis. And melasma is a separate story: it is a chronic, relapse-prone condition where light must be used cautiously and sometimes not at all — anyone promising to "erase melasma with BBL" is overselling.
Target 2: Vessels — redness, telangiectasia, rosacea's vascular component
Persistent facial redness and visible small vessels respond well to vascular-targeted light. In rosacea, BBL treats the vascular component — background redness and capillaries — while inflammatory bumps remain medication territory. The full component-by-component rosacea approach is here.
Target 3: Overall skin quality
Regular BBL sessions stimulate collagen and improve tone and texture — a genuine "photorejuvenation" effect supported by long-term observational data. Realistic framing: gradual, natural improvement in skin quality — not a substitute for lifting (that is ultrasound and radiofrequency territory) and not a replacement for daily sunscreen, which protects the result you paid for.
In our clinic: BBL Veloce, dermatologist-performed
We use the Sciton BBL Veloce platform. Wavelength selection, energy settings and the decision of whether light is the right tool at all are made by a dermatologist after examining your skin — including skin type assessment, because settings that suit fair skin can burn tanned or darker skin. This is also why BBL sessions are planned around your sun exposure: tanned skin waits.
The session, honestly
Sessions are short (often 15-30 minutes by area), discomfort is brief warm pulses, and most patients return to their day immediately. Pigmented spots typically darken before they flake — that is the treatment working, not a side effect. Several sessions are usual; the number depends on your targets and is set at examination, not sold as a package. Afterwards: strict sun protection, no picking at darkened spots, and skincare per instructions.
When BBL is not the answer
Tanned skin (postpone), pregnancy (postpone), melasma as the primary concern (approach with caution and a different plan), unexamined pigmented lesions (examine first), and deep textural scarring (that needs resurfacing and RF microneedling, not light).

Frequently asked questions
Is BBL safe for darker skin? — With correct settings and an experienced physician, selected treatments are possible — but this is exactly where medical judgment matters most; some targets are safer with other technologies.
How many sessions? — Depends on the target: spots often show change quickly; redness and skin quality build over a series. Decided at examination.
Does it hurt? — Brief warm snaps; numbing cream is rarely needed.
Summer or winter? — Light-based treatments prefer low-sun months; tanned skin postpones the session.
Is the result permanent? — Treated spots and vessels clear, but sun makes new ones — sunscreen is how you keep the result.
