Biotin for Hair Loss: What Do Studies Actually Say?

Short answer: Biotin helps hair loss only in people who are deficient in biotin - and deficiency is rare. In everyone else, high-dose biotin doesn't grow hair, and it carries an underappreciated risk: it can distort lab tests, including thyroid panels and even the troponin test used in diagnosing heart attacks.

Why everyone takes it anyway

Easy marketing: "hair vitamin" label, low cost, harmless image. But hair loss is a symptom - throwing a vitamin at it is like cooling the thermometer to treat a fever.

The evidence

No strong evidence supports biotin supplementation for hair growth in non-deficient people; positive reports mostly involve small deficient groups. Dr. Kağan Cingöz's summary: "Biotin opens the door whose lock is biotin. Most hair loss has a different lock: iron, thyroid, hormones, stress, genetics."

The lab warning worth remembering

High-dose biotin can interfere with common immunoassay tests. Always tell your physician you take biotin before blood tests; pausing it for several days beforehand is often advised.

The right sequence for hair loss

  1. Type identification - androgenetic? Telogen effluvium? Alopecia areata? Treatments differ completely

  2. Labs - ferritin, thyroid, vitamin D and hormones as indicated; supplements come from results, not guesses

  3. Evidence-based treatment by type - medical therapy where indicated, with PRP and mesotherapy as supportive options in the right patient

The real cost of biotin isn't the bottle - it's the months lost while the actual cause goes untreated. How we work with international patients.
